The kids sat around the fireplace of Snowfall Inn once more, feeling defeated after hitting more dead ends. All of their best leads in Silver Mountain had ended up being rather disappointing.

“We’re so close,” Claire said. “I can taste it. We just need someone to talk to us.”

“Maybe we can try interviewing the owners of the inn,” Caiden suggested.

“Interview about what, my dear?” asked an adorable grandmotherly woman as she approached them. “I’m Mumsy Snow, at your service.”

“Someone tried to hurt our dad,” Charlotte blurted out. “And my little brother. We heard about the Silver Shooter, the person who killed people during the Christmas parade… we saw some weird information online that suggested that he was the same person who tried to hurt our family.”

“Oh, dear,” the old woman said softly, moving to sit down on a sofa. “That’s a heavy subject young lady, and it’s not something that many people would ever talk about around here. They mostly like to pretend that it never happened.”

“We realized that when we asked around town,” Claire agreed.

“Do you know anything Mrs. Snow?” Caiden asked.

“Well, nothing was ever official,” the old woman responded, wringing her hands together in her lap. “But there were some rumors around town. And I always had my suspicions.”

“Please tell us,” Claire begged.

“Well, there was a woman… no, I shouldn’t talk about this,” Mrs. Snow said softly. “Especially not to children.”

“Please, we need to know,” Charlotte said. “We want to get some justice for all the people who were hurt—but most importantly, we want to save anyone from being hurt in the future.”

“Aren’t you three such sharp young people!” Mrs. Snow responded. “Your parents must be very proud to have such inquisitive children. You remind me of my own daughters, when they were younger. Alright—well I do have a hunch, if you would like to hear it.”

“A hunch is better than anything we have so far,” Claire answered.

“There was a very sick woman,” Mrs. Snow explained. “We spent many long hours together getting chemotherapy at the local hospital. Mrs. Merriweather—she ran the local daycare. Oh, she was a darling. Well, recently, she passed away. Just over a week ago, you see.”

“You had cancer?” Charlotte asked slowly, as chills ran through her, remembering Skye’s story.

“Yes, but I’m in remission now, thankfully. But poor Mrs. Merriweather was so hopeful that she would get into some clinical trials. She talked about it every day. Her son was very hopeful too. Alek. He was a troubled young man… he was never quite the same after serving in Afghanistan. But unfortunately, Mrs. Merriweather wasn’t accepted. And she lost all hope.”

“What clinical trials?” Claire asked, jumping to her feet and clenching her fists tightly. “Do you remember?”

“Oh, dear me. I’m an old woman, but I’ll try to remember. Something with a C—was it Cade? Cain? Cave…”

“Cage?” Caiden whispered.

“Yes!” the old woman responded, clapping her hands. “Cage Pharmaceuticals. They denied her access to the clinical trials… and, well… her son had been struggling with some mental illness.
